Visual Identity
Program
Pikeville College’s Visual Identity Program includes a seal, a wordmark, logos and a package of marks and logos comprising a subordinate graphic identity program. The value of such graphic elements to immediately identify the College is realized only when they are used throughout the communications program and when the design integrity is protected through exact specifications and consistent application.
Any use of the elements except as described in these guidelines must be approved in advance by the Office of Public Affairs.
College Seal
There are two official versions of the College seal. In both, the College motto “Prospiciam Ad Montes,” Latin for “Look to the Mountains,” rests against a backdrop of rolling mountains. The College motto is derived from Psalm 121:1: “I will lift mine eyes to the hills, from whence cometh my help.”
In the first version, which will hereafter be called the English version, Pikeville College and 1889, the year of founding, follow the contour of the circle and are separated by two solid circles. In the second version, hereafter known as the Latin version, the words Pikeville College are replaced with the Latin “Sigillum Collegii Pikevillensis,” meaning “Mark of Pikeville College.” The seal adopted in 1998 is a revision of the historical seal that has been used for decades at Pikeville College.
Use: The Latin version of the seal is used for diplomas, certificates and documents of a formal, official nature. This version is an appropriate subordinate symbol used on stationery items for academic divisions and administrative offices. The English version of the seal may ONLY be used for merchandising or other items as to promote the name of the College. In either case, the seal should be the symbol used with items that reflect institutional quality.
College Wordmark
The College wordmark consists of the stacked words “Pikeville” and “COLLEGE” separated by a rule (line). The wordmark is set in a customized version of “Times New Roman” typeface with “COLLEGE” in all capital letters.
Use: The wordmark may be used whenever it is appropriate to visually identify the College.
College Logo and Webmark
The College webmark and College logo (interlocking PC) have been discontinued. Please do not reproduce their use.
Athletic Logos
Pikeville College has adopted an athletic graphic identity logo package to heighten awareness of Pikeville College and its successful athletic program. The new logos and marks present a bold new look to the department’s image, while maintaining classic elements from Pikeville College’s past. The College’s new primary marks depict a ferocious bear rising over the words “Pikeville” and “Pikeville College Bears.” In addition, secondary marks featuring the bear’s head and the Pikeville College Wordmark from the primary mark were created.
Use: The athletic logos may be used wherever it is appropriate to visually identify the College, but not without the prior approval of the Office of Public Affairs. The logos can appear on the front or back of publications and printed materials, commercials, videotapes, presentations and official signage. The logos also may be used for merchandising or promotional items.
Authorized Subordinate Symbols
No unauthorized logo or graphic element may be used to represent the College or any divisions, departments, programs or offices. However, units with significant external responsibilities or a high level of public visibility may have distinct logos that may be used as subordinate symbols with the College seal or as distinct visual identities. Some examples are the current logos for the School of Osteopathic Medicine, A-OPTIC, Alumni Association, Booth Scholars Program and the Elizabeth Akers Elliott Nursing Program.
Reproduction
The logo, seal, wordmark and other images are available for approved uses from electronic files or printed artwork from the Office of Public Affairs. These elements should not be scanned or reproduced from a previously printed version because the quality of the image will be compromised.
For a high-quality copy of the logo, seal, wordmark or other image, please contact the Office of Public Affairs at (606) 218-5270 or by e-mail. Please specify what file format you would like the document in (JPG, PDF, Photoshop native (PSD), vector artwork, etc.).
Colors
Authorized academic colors are black (Pantone Process Black) and orange (Pantone PMS 021). These are the only appropriate colors for two-color reproduction of the logo, seal and wordmark. The logo, seal and wordmark may be printed in a single color, including gold, orange, black or in another dark color. The images also may be reversed from a dark color. In considering the use of anything other than a single color or the official colors, contact the Office of Public Affairs for assistance. Coordination through this office will ensure a consistent image.
