Appalachian Osteopathic Postgraduate Training Institute Consortium

The Appalachian Osteopathic Postgraduate Training Institute Consortium (A-OPTIC) is a continuation of Pikeville College School of Osteopathic Medicine’s (PCSOM) mission. PCSOM, Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine and Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine will graduate more than 300 osteopathic physicians per year. All of these students will need interships and residencies to complete their education. A-OPTIC is a mechanism to provide much-needed primary care training programs in Appalachia. A-OPTIC currently has more than 100 slots, with over half of them being in Family Practice, available for students all over the country primarily focused in the Southeastern United States.

An osteopathic postgraduate training institute is made up of an osteopathic college in formal association with osteopathic hospitals and other affiliated health care institutions. It is designed to ensure that the quality of the training programs is maintained at a very high level through the interaction between college faculty and the health care facility’s clinical faculty. This consortium is a separate corporation with bylaws, a board of directors, officers and standing committees, all to assure continuing quality medical education.
