PIKEVILLE, Ky. – Eighth-ranked Pikeville College blistered the nets in the second half and held on for an 85-82 win over the scrappy Highland Cavaliers of U.Va.-Wise Saturday at the East Kentucky Expo Center.
After struggling to the half trailing 31-29, the Bears got hotter in the second half, having particular success from the line. The Bears shot only 31.8 percent in the first half, but hit 75 percent (15-of-20) from the floor and made four of their five tries from the arc.
From the line, the Bears went 22-of-31 (71 percent) which was actually down from their 14-of-18 (77.8 percent) in the first half.
U.Va.-Wise (5-7) scored the game’s first seven points and led the entire first half, stretching it to eight (29-21) when Josh Jordan scored on a layup with 4:36 left.
Pikeville (10-1) took its first lead of the game with 18:56 left when junior Andre Thornton scored inside to lead 33-31. The lead grew to 13 (72-59) when junior Justin Hicks knocked down a jumper with 4:46 to play.
The Cavs didn’t die, however, and pulled within one at 83-82 with six seconds left on a layup by sophomore Norris Gaskins. But the Bears got two more tosses from senior J.C. Clark to push the lead to three, and then caused the Cavs to lose control of the basketball as time expired to pull out the win.
Four Bears reached double figures, led by Clark’s 22. He was 16-of-20 from the stripe. Thornton followed with 20, hitting 10-of-13 from the line after ending the first semester below 31 percent.
Freshman Trevor Setty followed with 12 while hicks tossed in 11.
The Cavs were led by freshman Sam Eligwe, who came off the bench for 25 points in his first game. He was followed by senior Pance Kecev’s 19, hitting 5-of-11 from the arc, and junior Adam Hood’s 13.
The Bears will be back in action on Monday night, playing another member of the Appalachian Athletics Conference in Virginia Intermont. The women’s game begins at 5:30 with the men following.
