PIKEVILLE, Ky. – The Pikeville College soccer teams ended a tumultuous week with a doubleheader sweep over Berea College Sunday afternoon at the W.C. Hambley Athletics Complex.

The women opened the twin bill with a 4-0 shutout, while the men followed with a late goal to win 1-0.

The wins came three days after the sudden resignation of Coach Ken DeCook. Robert Staggs, director of athletics, coached the team on Sunday.

The teams return to action on Wednesday afternoon when they travel to WVU Tech for a pair of games to begin at 4 p.m. They return home on Saturday when they’ll host Johnson Bible College beginning at 2 p.m. with Senior Day ceremonies.

Women: Pikeville (5-6-2) scored a pair of goals in each half. Scoring opened when sophomore Ashley Crutcher netted an unassisted goal 14:38 into the match. That was quickly followed by a goal by freshman Lyndsay Moncsko, who was assisted by junior Meagan Johnson, in the 22nd minute.

The score stayed 2-0 until the Lady Bears posted goals less than three minutes apart late in the match. Johnson scored on a penalty kick in the 77th minute, while junior Brittany Moore scored an unassisted goal 2:22 later.

The shutout was recorded by junior Becky Davenport, who needed only three saves to blank the Mountaineers.

Men: Sophomore forward Andrew Martin scored an unassisted goal with 5:00 remaining to give Pikeville College a 1-0 win over Berea.

The Mountaineers had eight shots on goal in the contest, but freshman goalkeeper Sheldon Thomas was up to the task and recorded the shutout.

Pikeville (6-6-1) had only four shots on goal, but Martin managed to score the game’s only goal for the win after 85 minutes of scoreless action.
