PIKEVILLE, Ky. – Robert Staggs accepted a letter of resignation on Thursday afternoon, opening up a pair of coaching positions.
Ken DeCook, head coach of the men’s and women’s soccer teams, stepped down, citing a family situation. His resignation stated his date of departure to be this Sunday, Oct. 18, at noon, two hours before his teams’ next matches.
“He said he’d been having family issues for about the last six weeks and needed to leave immediately,” Staggs, the director of athletics at Pikeville College, said. “We regret it and hope the situation plays out in his favor, and wish him the best of luck.”
DeCook was the second coach of the soccer programs and had made great strides with the programs, which were only two years old when he came on board. The women will enter play on Sunday 4-6-2, while the men are currently 5-6-1 on the season.
Pikeville plays host to Berea College on Sunday at the W.C. Hambley Athletics Complex in a doubleheader schedule to begin at 2 p.m.
For the time being, Staggs will be leading the program. He also coaches volleyball and softball at the school. Volleyball and both soccers will begin postseason play the first week of November, leaving only two weeks remaining in the seasons.
“We are currently searching for head coaches for the men’s and women’s soccer programs,” Staggs said. “We hope to have this situation resolved as soon as possible, but we are also looking for the right answer for the longterm success of our programs.
“We certainly won’t rush to a coach because we only have a couple of weeks remaining in the season. We owe it to the players we have to find the right coach to lead this program.”
