September 12, 2009
PIKEVILLE, Ky. – First-year programs tend to be easy marks on nearly every level of athletics, but that didn’t hold true on Saturday afternoon as the Pikeville College soccer teams split with Marygrove College.
Marygrove, located in Detroit, got a win in the women’s match 1-0 before falling in the men’s contest by a 2-0 final.
Pikeville will be off until next Saturday when it opens Mid-South Conference play, hosting the University of the Cumberlands in matches at 2 and 4 p.m. at the W.C. Hambley Athletics Complex.
Pikeville and Marygrove will meet again in two weeks when Coach Ken DeCook takes his teams north.
Women: Freshman Sarah Kator scored an unassisted goal in the 79th minute and the Mustangs held on for the 1-0 win. Kator’s goal was one of only six shots on goal for Marygrove on the day. The loss was the first on the season for the Lady Bears, who stand 3-1-1.
Shana DeVoe rejected all eight shots by Pikeville in the win.
Eight different Pikeville players had shots on goal in the loss.
Men: A pair of first-half goals were more than enough for Pikeville, which improved to 4-1 with the 2-0 win.
Pikeville scored early on a goal by sophomore Rene Ruiz, who left the net to play forward on Saturday. The next goal came at 26:19 when sophomore Cody Hayes scored.
Goalkeeper Sheldon Thomas, a freshman from Corbin, blanked the Mustangs, rejecting all eight shots on goal.
