A lot of times after coaches retire from coaching, they move on to sports broadcasting. After Monday, Pikeville College basketball coach Kelly Wells will know if he has it in the future.

On Monday Wells will anchor the sports segment of the WYMT evening news. It will be quite different for Wells, who hopes to come out of the broadcast with his dignity intact.

“The main key is to try to not make a fool of myself,” said Wells. “As coaches we are often in the spotlight. But we’re not in front of the camera a whole lot. It will be different, that’s for sure.”

When Wells was approached about anchoring the segment, he was quick to accept and is excited about being able to give back to the community.

“I’ve always tried to give back to the community,” said Wells. “WYMT’s main purpose of doing this is to give back to the fans. Anytime I can help do that I will. It’s also going to be a whole lot of fun and will be good publicity for Pikeville College.”

WYMT sports director Jeff Archer noted that when they started tossing around ideas of coaches to let anchor a sports segment, Wells was one of the first names to surface.

“We wanted to do something different,” said Archer. “We thought this would be a great way to give back to the community. We’re very excited to have Kelly Wells coming here to kick it off for us. He’s very well spoken and a great person in the community. He’s been very helpful to us over the years of covering Pikeville College basketball and we’re very excited to have him.”

Wells will broadcast an entire sports segment. The segment will be simplified some but not completely.

“We’re not going to do any highlights because that is the hardest thing,” said Archer. “We’re not going to dumb it down completely.”

Wells noted that after he’s finished, the current sports broadcasters will have even more of a lock on their posts than before.

“I’m definitely going to increase their job security,” said Wells. “But the main thing is we’re just going to go and have a lot of fun. That is what it’s all about.”

Archer noted that WYMT hopes to broadcast a different coach every Monday for the month of July.

“We got Kelly coming Monday,” said Archer. “We have another coach committed for later in the month and are talking to a couple more coaches about coming. But we figured Kelly would be a great guy to start it off for us. I’m excited about it and I’m sure he will do a great job. And that’s what we wanted to do; we wanted to start with someone who we knew would do a good job.”
