PIKEVILLE, Ky. — Kelly Wells is always positive, always upbeat, always leading his team in the proper direction.
But when he talks about the current status of the 2008-09 Pikeville College Bears, his third installment thereof, there’s a little more excitement in his tone. “I like what we’ve put together,” he says with a note of decided enthusiasm. “Our staff has worked very hard and I think we’ve got the makings of something special here.”
Wells, who turned a 12-19 team his first season into a 22-9 club a year ago, touts five additions with NCAA Div. I experience on their resume and a junior college standout among the 10 additions to the roster.
“We have a lot of experience in some good leagues,” he said. “I think our fan base is going to like what we’ve been able to accomplish to this point.”
These players join six returning members of the Bears. They are Justin Hicks 5-11 sophomore guard from Hazard, Ky.; Haakim Johnson 6-7 senior wing from Passaic, N.J.; Ewan Linton, a 6-9 senior power forward from Kingston, Jamaica; Dan Penick, a 6-8 sophomore power forward from Ludlow, Ky.; Adam Simmons a 6-5, junior wing from Huntington, W.Va.; and, Robbie Spears, a 6-4 senior forward, Shelbiana, Ky.
