From left: Pikeville College Professor Robert Arts, PC alumnae Tiffany Thacker and Miranda Dotson and Professor Nancy Cade recently attended The Washington Center’s 2009 Gala in Washington, D.C., at the renowned National Building Museum. Proceeds from the gala provide support and scholarships for students participating in The Washington Center’s programs. This year’s gala theme, “In Service of a Nation,” recognized the ways in which individuals can impact nations and society through civic engagement. It also highlighted the democratic principles that “the power of a nation lies within the hands of its citizens and that participation is both the promise and responsibility of citizenship.” Honors were also given to special individuals who have devoted their lives to the service of their fellow citizens. Pikeville College students have participated in The Washington Center seminars for several years, including the upcoming “Inside Washington 2010” in January. Cade, a professor of history and political science at the college, has served as a faculty advisor and mentor for the organization since 2004, including two national political conventions and two presidential inaugurations. Honored by The Washington Center as a “Faculty Leader of the Year” in 2007, she currently serves as campus liaison for the program and as a member of The Washington Center’s national liaison advisory board.
