Three fourth-quarter touchdowns lead Union past Bears
October 17, 2009
PIKEVILLE, Ky. – Sophomore quarterback Mike Brinkley threw three fourth quarter touchdowns to lead a comeback 21-6 win Union College, spoiling homecoming for Pikeville College Saturday night.
Brinkley’s numbers were somewhat pedestrian, going 13-of-31 for 138. But he heated up down the stretch with the three fourth-quarter touchdowns for the win, the first road win of the season for 4-3 Union.
The Union win gave the road team its first win after the home team had won each of the first eight meetings between the Mid-South Conference East Division rivals.
The teams were quiet offensively for nearly the first three periods. Pikeville got on the scoreboard with 1:59 left in the third when freshman quarterback Chase Ellis scored on a five-yard keeper. The score ended an eight-play, 56-yard drive, but the snap failed on the PAT to leave the score 6-0.
The Bulldogs immediately responded, needing only seven plays to cover 61 yards with Brinkley’s 23-yard scoring pass to freshman Tim Dandy. Sophomore Chad Boyington hit the first of his three extra-points with 13:31 left to put Union on top to stay at 7-6.
After quickly turning the Bear offense away, Brinkley got after it again with a 10-play, 51-yard driving ending on a 22-yard toss to freshman Rob Brown with 6;17 to play to make it 14-6.
A turnover gave the Bulldogs the ball at the Bear 27, and on the third play of the drive Brinkley hit junior P.J. Burrowes from eight yards out to set the final score.
A major difference in the game was turnovers; while the Bears coughed it up four times (two fumbles, two interceptions), Union went without a turnover in the win.
Junior tailback Martrey Littlejohn led the Bear offense with 126 yards on 19 carries, giving Pikeville its first 100-plus-yard rushing game since then-quarterback Dan Wideman carried for 117 last Nov. 1 in a loss to Georgetown.
Ellis, the quarterback, followed with 42 yards on 14 carries.
Ellis was 7-of-17 for 60 yards in the air, throwing both interceptions. Senior Nick Jamerson caught three balls for 23 yards on the night he was crowned Homecoming queen; the leader by yardage was freshman Levi Hanks, whose only catch was good for 25 yards.
Brinkley led the Bulldogs in rushing as well as passing, carrying for 46 yards on seven tries. Union ran 36 times for 148. Burrowes caught three passes for 22 yards, while Dandy gained 35 yards on two receptions.
Defensively, Pikeville was led by senior DeVaughn Whitley (four solo, four assists) and junior Jamar Porter (five and three) with eight tackles apiece.
Union for six tackles from sophomore Jacob Crothers, who forced a fumble, recovered two and had an interception. Senior Khambrel Simpkins also had six tackles and a pass breakup.
