Tech bounces Bears in MSC baseball tourney   April 25, 2008

PIKEVILLE, Ky. — After being held to only two hits the day before, WVU Tech erupted for 13 hits in an 11-2 victory over Pikeville College on day two of the 2008 Mid-South Conference Baseball Tournament.

Pikeville (10-38-1), coming off an upset of top-seeded University of the Cumberlands yesterday, was not able to get on the scoreboard until the fifth inning. Trailing 7-0, the Bears scored twice thanks to a couple of walks and two hit batsmen, and threatened to cut into the Tech lead even more.

Walks to Brandon Fleming and Chris Rakes on either side of a single by Josh Adams loaded the bases, and Fleming and Adams scored when Matt Fleenor and Ryan Chapman were hit by pitches.

But Tech’s Jeff Krauklis was able to get the Pikeville batter to fly out to center with two down and the bases loaded to end the threat, and the Golden Bears would score three more times in the bottom of the inning to put the game out of reach.

Six different batters had a hit for Pikeville, who still remain alive in the double-elimination tournament. Fleming, Adams, Chapman, John Williamson, Isaac Williamson and Adam Elmer each had singles for the Bears.

Tech was led by Phil Brockman’s 3-4 and two RBI performance. Danny Flores also finished 3-4 for the Golden Bears, who avoided elimination today with the victory.

Victory Zayas earned the win for the Golden Bears, while Matt DeBlauw was tagged with the loss.

Pikeville will now play the losing team in Friday’s last game between Georgetown and Campbellsville, which was tied in the 15th inning at 6-6. First pitch is set for Saturday morning at 11.
