GEORGETOWN, Ky. — Pikeville College took advantage of six West Virginia University Tech errors and added four hits to cruise to an 8-0 win Friday afternoon in the elimination round of the 2008 Mid-South Conference softball tournament.
Pikeville (26-27) will now have a rematch with Lindsey Wilson College in the 4 p.m. game. Lindsey Wilson, which lost to Pikeville 3-0 on Thursday, eliminated Cumberlands 7-1 in the first game on Friday.
“We did what we needed to do to win that game,” said Coach Robert Staggs, whose team posted two in the first and six in the second. “We needed to make it quick and get out of the sun because we’ll need to be as fresh as possible when we meet Lindsey this afternoon.”
In softball, the five-inning mercy rule is eight runs, so the game ended after 4-½ innings.
Senior Terri Mullins reached on a one-out walk and scored when Krista Kouns doubled. The throw home to get Mullins was late, and when the catcher threw to second to keep Kouns there it sailed into the outfield, enabling her to reach third.
She scored on a sacrifice fly by junior catcher Katie Parsley.
The second was when the damage was done. Senior shortstop Megan Swan led off with a ground ball to third, but the throw sailed into right moving her to second, and when the ball bounced past the fielder she moved all the way to third. She scored when Anna Bevins doubled. Bevins made it 4-0 when she scored off an error when sent Cortney Bentley to third.
A walk and stolen base by Mullins put runners in scoring position and Parsley came through again, lazing a single ot center to score two. After senior Heather Robbins reached on an error, Parsley scored when a ground ball by Tiffany Allen was misplayed.
The eighth run scored when Allen purposefully got in a rundown allowing Robbins to scoot home.
Kouns had two hits, including a double, with an RBI and a run scored. The other two hits were Bevins’ double and a single by Parsley who drove in three, scored one and threw out a would-be base-stealer, her third in as many tries in the tournament.
