PIKEVILLE, Ky.

In the classroom, they’re studying war and what history teaches about the nation’s struggle for freedom. Once the books close, they’re taking a different approach to understanding the sacrifices of the quiet heroes who make freedom more than words on a page.

Pikeville College’s Booth and Elite Scholars will be presenting a “Tribute to Veterans” on Wednesday, July 28, at 7 p.m. in Booth Auditorium, Record Memorial Building. The special presentation and talent show will be the culmination of the Booth and Elite Scholars summer academic enrichment program. The performance is free and the community is cordially invited.

For two weeks this summer, the students have been studying U.S. wars, with an emphasis on WWII through the current conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan. As part of the experience, the scholars are also taking a multi-media approach to learning with a digital video and photography class, filming a documentary, recording a patriotic CD and producing a newspaper dedicated to veterans.

The students have been filming interviews with active duty soldiers and veterans for the documentary. Those with musical talents are performing and producing a CD, while others will share their experience through journalism, poetry, art and photography.

“I feel very blessed to be a part of this project,” said Taryn Cantrell, a Pikeville High School student. “It has opened my eyes and made me realize what our country has gone through … that freedom is not free. It makes me appreciate the freedoms we have.”

Ashley Fleming of Elkhorn City agrees. “It’s just an honor to be able to give back to people who have given so much to us.”

Students are also gathering items to display as part of a memorial during the event. Fleming and Cantrell, who have been working on the musical portion of the program, are excited that the tribute will be available on the Internet at http://www.ihigh.com/highenergyphotos.

“We’ve had confirmation from soldiers in Germany who are going to be watching,” said Cantrell. “We really want them to know how much we appreciate their service.”
