January 15, 2010
CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Ninth-ranked Campbellsville University opened Mid-South Conference play with an 85-53 win over the Lady Bears of Pikeville College Thursday night.
Campbellsville improved to 15-1 on the season with the win, which dropped Pikeville to 12-5.
The teams battled through the first half, with the Tigers taking a 41-34 lead to the lockerroom. But the second half was all home team, outscoring the Lady Bears 44-19 to open league play with an impressive win.
Campbellsville shot 45.5 percent in the second half, but held Pikeville to only 28 percent shooting from the field.
For Pikeville, the highlight came with 3:52 left in the game when junior Natiera Hinton, a first-team all-league and honorable mention All-American a year ago, hit a free throw to give her an even 1,000 points in her career. For Hinton, the milestone came in only her 46th game as a Lady Bear.
She led the Lady Bears with 21. In addition, she had eight rebounds, five steals, three assists and three blocked shots.
Pikeville had no answer for Whitney Ballinger. The junior from Carrollton had 21 points and 16 rebounds, with seven of them coming off the offensive glass. She too filled the stat sheet, leaving the game with three blocks, two steals and two assists.
Ballinger was joined in double figures by freshman Mackenzie Lee’s 16 points off the bench.
Hinton had two teammates in double figures, with senior Alexis Johnson tossing in 11 to go with seven rebounds while sophomore Megan Mosley tossed in 10 markers.
Pikeville will return home on Saturday, hosting the Lady Raiders of Lindsey Wilson at 2:30 at the East Kentucky Expo Center. The game will be preceded by the semifinals of the 15th Region girls’ All “A” Classic, and followed by No. 6 Pikeville playing Lindsey Wilson at 4:30.
