PIKEVILLE, Ky. – The Pikeville College women’s bowling team placed all three of its teams in the championship round, had a player take medalist honors and had half the all-tournament team. But when it came time for the big hardware from its own Orange & Black Classic, it went to another team.
Meanwhile, the men placed no team higher than 13th in the 49-team field and had only six bowlers among the top 100 individuals in the tournament it hosted this weekend in the Dayton suburb of Beavercreek, Ohio.
On the women’s side, senior Jennifer Wright was the top individual bowler with a total of 1416, outdistancing Robert Morris University’s Samantha Kelly by 58 pins. Senior Emily Witt and sophomore Kim Yioulos also made the all-tournament team with totals of 1296 and 1293, respectively.
They were three of 10 bowlers to finish in the Top 25 from Pikeville College.
When the 20-team field was narrowed down to an eight-team tournament, Pikeville College Black fell in the finals 3.5 to 0.5 to Lindenwood University Reid. Pikeville Black had eliminated Pikeville White in the opening round 3-1, while Lindenwood handled Pikeville Orange 3-0 in the semifinals.
Other Pikeville bowlers in the Top 25 individuals were senior Sarah Germano, who finished 10th; sophomore Melia Bennett, 11th; senior Becky Sulligan, 14th; sophomore Natasha Martin, 19th; senior Nichole Burke, 21st; senior Ashley Stahurski, 22nd; and sophomore Chelsea Gilliam, 25th.
In the men’s tournament, Lindenwood’s Lions came from the four seed to win title, beating Calumet Black in the finals. Wright State University Black and Martin Methodist A finished third and fourth.
Pikeville’s top individual performer was junior Nicholas Atkinson, who finished at 1226 for 30th place. Junior Jeremy King was 32nd; junior Matt Palinkas finished 53rd; sophomore Richard Lane 56th; freshman Jonathon Crews 89th; and junior James Cheff, 100th.
Pikeville returns to action the weekend of October 31 when they compete in the Brunswick Southern Collegiate Classic in Marietta, Ga.
