BRISTOL, Va. – The Pikeville College Lady Bears got the 2009-10 season off to a flying start thanks to a 71-54 win over Virginia-Intermont College Wednesday night.
The Lady Bears built a first-half lead to 40-24 and were up by 24 late before cruising to the win.
Pikeville (1-0) got the win despite shooting a pedestrian 37.9 percent from the floor. They sank 4-of-11 from the arc and hit 71.4 percent (15-of-21) from the line.
Their efforts on the defensive end were obvious, holding the Cobras to 32.4 percent shooting. The Appalachian Athletics Conference member did hit 6-of-15 (40 percent) from the arc and 12-of-16 (75 percent) from the line.
Three Lady Bears reached double figures in the scoring column, with junior Whitney Compton recording a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Of her boards, six came off the offensive glass. The Lady Bears had an astounding 26 offensive rebounds and a 44-35 rebounding advantage.
Senior Alexis Johnson had 10 rebounds for the Lady Bears, grabbing five on each end. The Imperial, Calif., native had eight points.
Compton was followed by junior Lauren Potts with 12 points. All four of her rebounds were on the offensive end. Sophomore point guard Megan Mosley tossed in 10 and handed out a team-high four assists.
Virginia Intermont was led by Heather Odle’s 16 points. Alicia Cook came off the bench to score 13. Ashley Grimm paced the Cobras with right rebounds, while Priscilla Moseh handed out six assists while scoring nine points off the bench.
The Lady Bears play their home opener on Monday night when Alice Lloyd comes to town. The game will open a doubleheader in which the men entertain Shawnee State and begin at 5:30 at the East Kentucky Expo Center.
Exhibition game changed: Sunday’s exhibition game at Morehead State for the Lady Beas will now tip off at 5 p.m. The game time was originally 2 p.m., but was moved to accommodate the athletics department at MSU, which could host a semifinal-round OVC soccer tournament game that afternoon.
Tickets for the exhibition, which will be played in the 6500-seat Johnson Arena, are available through Morehead State.
