PIKEVILLE, Ky.

James Hurley, vice president at Pikeville College, was named this year’s education agency winner for Administrator of the Year by the Kentucky Association of School Administrators (KASA).

The award is designed to recognize dynamic leaders that embody the zeal for leadership in education that KASA represents. Award recipients are quintessential leaders in education that drive improvement in all aspects of schools. Hurley was presented with the Paragon Award on July 21, during the opening session of KASA’s 42nd Annual Summer Institute at the Galt House in Louisville, Ky. The award is presented to two education leaders statewide, including one to a building-level administrator and one to an education agency administrator.

“Mr. Hurley is the ideal that administrators strive for. His hands-on approach to problem-solving made an impact at Belfry Middle School, and I’ve no doubt he will continue that legacy at Pikeville College,” said Wayne Young, executive director of KASA.

KASA is the largest school administrators group in Kentucky, representing more than 3,000 education leaders from across the commonwealth. Formed in 1969, KASA connects education leaders to policy makers, legislators, and other interest groups and provides numerous benefits and services to Kentucky’s school administrators.

Before joining Pikeville College in 2009, Hurley spent 11 years in the public education system, serving in numerous leadership and administrative roles, including as principal, assistant principal, dean of students, teacher and athletic coach. Under his leadership, Belfry Middle School was named a national Schools to Watch in 2008. The school’s first principal, Hurley opened the newly-consolidated facility, bringing together students, faculty and staff from five schools.

A graduate of Pikeville College, Hurley earned his master’s degree from Indiana University, Rank I from the University of Kentucky and his superintendent’s certification at Morehead State University. He is currently working on a doctorate in educational leadership at Eastern Kentucky University. Hurley previously served on the KASA Board of Directors and on the board of directors of the Kentucky Association of Secondary School Principals and the Kentucky Association of School Councils. He is a member of the board of directors of the Pikeville Area YMCA and the advisory board of Appalachian Regional Healthcare (ARH).

Along with his wife, Tina, a Pikeville College alumna, the Hurleys have two sons, Drew and Carter. Formerly of Chavies, Ky., Hurley is the son of Frank and Carolyn Hurley.
