MONTGOMERY, W.Va. – Junior Justin Hicks scored all 18 of his points in the second half, part of a 62-point period for his team, to lead No. 14 Pikeville College past WVU Tech 88-81 Saturday afternoon.
Hicks broke out of a shooting clump by hitting 4-of-6 from the arc after halftime, when the Bears trailed 33-26. Pikeville improved to 18-2 overall and, for however briefly, gained sole possession of first place in the Mid-South Conference at 5-1 because Campbellsville’s game with St. Catharine was postponed until Monday night.
WVU Tech has lost four straight league games after going 2-0 on opening weekend. The Golden Bears are 12-9 overall.
Pikeville got 24 points from Jonathan Clark in his return after missing three games with an ankle injury. The senior from Ypsilanti, Mich., led the Bears to a 40-13 advantage in bench points.
Pikeville pulled within three (20-17) with 8:35 left in the first when freshman Trevor Setty scored. But the Golden Bears responded with 10 unanswered points, and when Rickey Young followed two free throws with a steal and layup, Tech led 30-17 with 2:31 remaining.
Pikeville battled back, with Clark scoring six unanswered points in the final 55 seconds to trim the lead to 33-26 at the half.
Clark and Hicks were joined in double figures by junior Andre Thornton, who tossed in 13 and grabbed seven rebounds. Senior Anthony Smith’s 10 rebounds powered the Bears to a 51-33 advantage on the glass.
Young and Robby Marshall had 20 points each for Tech, while senior guard Darryl Slack tossed in 13 and handed out five assists.
Pikeville will return home on Thursday night, hosting Cumberlands, while Tech visits Campbellsville on Thursday. Both games are set for 8 p.m. starts.
