PIKEVILLE, Ky. — Two Bears and a Lady Bear were among those honored Friday night as the Mid-South Conference hosted its basketball awards banquet at the Mark V.
Senior Jeff Ferguson and junior William Harris were first-team all-conference on the men’s side, while junior Alice Daniel was so honored on the women’s side.
One Bear, freshman Justin Hicks, was named honorable mention all-conference, while two players, redshirt junior Alexis Johnson and sophomore Adam Simmons, were named to the academic all-conference.
Also, Lady Bear senior Heather English won the women’s basketball Champions of Character award.
The Mid-South Conference is in its first year of honoring one student-athlete from each sport as a Champion of Character. The Champions of Character initiative was started by the NAIA, sending the message that off-field activities are the most important aspect of collegiate athletics, and this year, the Mid-South Conference became the first league to embrace the initiative with an honor for every sport.
Ferguson is a 6-10 senior from Toronto, Ontario, who averaged 17.9 points and 7.2 rebounds a game this season for the Bears. Ferguson led the MSC in field-goal percentage, hitting 58.5 percent, and blocked shots at 1.92 per game. His scoring was second in the league to player of the year Gus Chase of Georgetown College, while he was fourth in rebounding.
Harris, a 6-7 junior from Winchester, Ky., had solid numbers across the board. He averaged 12.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 3.5 assists. He hit 54 percent from the floor and had 50 steals on the season. His 1.2 blocked shots per game was third in the conference.
This is the second all-conference honor for Harris, who was an honorable mention All-American a year ago.
Daniel is a 5-8 junior from Meally, Ky., in Johnson County. She averaged 11.2 points per game this season, hitting a solid 40.4 percent from the arc where she hit 76-of-188. In addition, she was an 86.7 percent free-throw shooter.
Hicks, a 5-11 freshman from Hazard, averaged 10.3 points and his 4.87 assists per game was two one-hundredths of a percent from leading the conference. He hit 35.4 percent from the arc and was a sizzling 90.2 percent (55-61) from the free-throw line this season.
