PIKEVILLE, Ky. – Pikeville College and the East Kentucky Expo Center have reached an agreement that will move the majority of the school’s home basketball schedule to the facility this season.

The announcement came today in a 3 p.m. press conference held at the Expo Center.

The men’s basketball team will use the Expo Center as its home facility for all but two dates, while the women’s team will play at the arena for all events save five.

“This is a tremendous day for Pikeville College and an amazing opportunity for us,” said Coach Kelly Wells, head men’s basketball coach. “No NAIA program in the country plays in a finer facility than the Expo Center. We’re very blessed to have it in our community and thrilled we were able to reach this agreement.”

“We’re very excited to have a tenant like Pikeville College at our facility,” said Steve St. John, general manager of the Expo Center. “We believe having Pikeville College involved raises the standard for our facility.”

“There’s no question this should open a lot of doors for us, particularly from a recruiting standpoint,” said Bill Watson, entering his 13th season as head coach of the Lady Bears. “But the great thing is it not only helps the basketball programs but also the college across the board. This is an unbelievable opportunity for us at Pikeville College and we’re thrilled to be a part of it.”

The opportunity for investments was a major driving force behind this agreement. The college and Expo Center have partnered with eight local businesses to insure the success of the venture: Appalachian Wireless, Citizens National Bank, Community Trust Bank, Cornerstone Investment Group, EmbroidMe, BB&T, East Kentucky Broadcasting and Intermountain Sports Network.

“We couldn’t have made this move without the involvement of these companies,” said Watson, “and we certainly appreciate their assistance.”

The move will also open many more doors for Pikeville College. “It will allow us opportunities to host events for our alumni base, the PCSOM and several other things we will want to do,” said Wells.

“The class of the Pikeville College coaching staffs speaks for itself,” said St. John. “That’s the type of quality we like bringing to the Expo Center. We’re very happy to have them.”

The men’s basketball team will play all games at the Expo Center with two exceptions – the second day of the BB&T Classic on Nov. 21 and the home game against WVU Tech on Feb. 20.

The women will play there for all but five events – Nov. 28 vs. Union, Dec. 4 vs. Morris, the Gattis Classic, Jan. 7 vs. Berea and WVU Tech.

All of those games will be played at the Pikeville College Gym.

Pikeville College is also announcing its season ticket drive. Season tickets will cover all 18 home men’s basketball game and all 16 home women’s events, with premium seating at the Expo Center, for only $85.

“We couldn’t be happier today,” said Wells. “We want to make the Expo Center on game nights the place to be.”
