Dear Diary: This and That

Dear Diary: This and That   April 18, 2008

WICHITA, Kan. — Welcome back to The Rock, where, after a decent night’s sleep, we thought we get you caught up on a couple of things going on here at the 2008 USBC Intercollegiate Team Championships, presented by Storm.

  • A tradition here at the ITCs to begin Thursday’s action with the Coaches Shootout, where a coach from all 32 teams picks out a house ball and shoes and rolls one down the lanes. All coaches who roll eight or better stay up until only one stands. On the women’s side, Ron Damron was the winner this year. We all get free polos due to his outstanding ability to knock down eight pins four times in a row and then roll a strike in the fifth round.
  • One of the things people tell me they enjoy most about these diaries is finding out what we eat out here. We’ve found ourselves a little place we’re pretty fond of this week. It’s called Spangles, a sort of 50s-style sandwich dive. They call it a diner, which in my estimation is a little misleading. But I really love this place. They make a Philly-style sandwich on sourdough that is unbelievable. They chop the meat, peppers and onions and it really is outstanding.
  • Then there’s Buffalo Wild Wings … yum …
  • We’re assuming the link for today’s live scoring will be from the front page, www.bowl.com. Whereas in the past the scoring has simply been along the lines of “Pikeville 4, Wichita State 1”, it’s my understanding this year they’ll actually post scores for each game of the best-of-seven series.
  • Of course, we’ll be writing releases to give a little more detail on the outcomes here for the Pikeville games.
