WICHITA, Kan. — The Pikeville College bowling teams advanced once again in second-round play in the 2008 USBC Intercollegiate Team Championships, with each picking up 4-2 wins to remain unbeaten.

The women knocked off Central Florida while the men handled Arizona State University. Wins in this afternoon’s third round would put each in the championship round of their respective bracket, which takes place Saturday morning.

The women fell behind after a first-game loss 228-177 before rallying to win three straight by scores of 205-181, 201-186 and 195-151. CFU took Game Five 199-186 before Pikeville polished it off 234-160.

The opening game saw the Striking Knights roll seven strikes down the stretch to win. Pikeville put away the second game by getting four straight strikes in frames 8-9-10 from Becky Sulligan, Jennifer Wright and two from Ashly Galante.

Central Florida had six strikes in the first nine frames of Game Three, but were open in the other three to leave room for a Pikeville win. The Lady Bears rolled six strikes in the game and put it away with consecutive tenth-frame strikes from Galante. Four more open frames in Game Four prevented UCF from getting a win there.

Four straight strikes for the Knights in 5-6-7-8 paved the way for the win in Game Five, but Pikeville had two turkeys in the sixth game as Wright and Galante rolled five strikes in the win.

Galante had seven strikes in the match, while Sarah Germano rolled six. Kayla Bandy had three strikes and six spares, while Wright had three and five.

Pikeville will battle second-seeded Lindenwood in the third round. The Lions got a battle from Bellarmine before winning 4-3 in the opening round, then blanked NCAA champion Maryland-Eastern Shore 4-0 in Round Two.

On the men’s side, Pikeville won 179-158, 225-160, 169-189, 199-207, 211-152 and 195-193 to advance past Arizona State.

Gerald Richardson bounced back from a rough opening-round set to roll nine strikes from his leadoff position. The freshmen combination of Jeremy King and Mark Mantle were again solid in the 2-3 slots, posting seven strikes and four spares each in their 12 frames.

Nathan Hause and Kyle Barnes had five strikes each, with Hause having four spares and Barnes three.

The Bears will face UNLV in the third round. The Rebels knocked off Vincennes 4-1 in the opening round before blanking Central Florida 4-0.
