PIKEVILLE, Ky. – For the second straight week the Pikeville College Bears gave up 21 points in a period and it proved to be the difference as U.Va.-Wise picked up a 28-13 win.
The game was the second Thursday night contest of the season for the Bears, who play again next Thursday night when they visit No. 19 Georgetown College.
After a scoreless first period, the Cavs needed less than six minutes to run out to a 21-0 lead in the second period.
The first touchdown came on a one-yard plunge by linebacker-turned-fullback Amondre Johnson, ending a drive that needed only four plays to cover 52 yards. Senior free safety Keith McBride provided some excitement for the second score, returning an interception 58 yards. Junior tailback Jyron Barclay scored on an 11-yard run for the third, and a two-point conversation pass from senior quarterback Brad Robbins to junior Brad Ricker made it 21-0.
Pikeville (2-6, 0-3 in the Mid-South Conference East Division) scored the only points of the third frame, as a turnover gave it the ball on the 31 and five plays later freshman quarterback Chase Ellis plunged in from the one to make it 21-7 with 47 seconds left in the period.
The teams traded scores in the fourth. Wise got a 21-yard pass from Robbins to senior Jason Lovett, while Pikeville scored when freshman Cedric Elmore picked up a fumble and scooted 22 yards for the end zone.
The Bears struggled offensively, gaining only 115 yards of offense. On the ground, junior Martrey Littlejohn led the way with only 27 yards on nine carries. Ellis was 6-of-18 for 67 yards with one interception. His primary target was senior receiver Nick Jamerson, who caught three for 51 yards.

Lovett is third in the country, entering the game with an average of 113 yards per contest in the air.
Defensively, senior DeVaughn Whitley led the Bears with 11 tackles, four being solos. He had two tackles for loss and was credited with 1.5 sacks. He shared the latter numbers with junior Tramayel Jones, who had 10 tackles in the loss.
Junior Dan Wideman and senior Kenny Harris had eight tackles apiece for the Bears.
