PIKEVILLE, Ky. – The Pikeville College Bears will begin league play as the nation’s sixth-ranked team as the NAIA Div. I poll was released on Monday night.

Pikeville, which takes a 12-1 record into Thursday night’s Mid-South Conference opener against Campbellsville, is up two places from the most recent poll, which was released Dec. 14 by the national office in Kansas City, Mo.

In addition, the poll was of interest to the Bears because they open league play against one of five new teams in the national ratings. Campbellsville, 12-4 on the season, is ranked 21st in the country.

“If our league doesn’t have four teams qualify for the national tournament, there’s something wrong,” said Kelly Wells, head coach of the Bears. “We’re pleased with the rating, and glad people are noticing what we’re doing at Pikeville, but we’re about to see how tough this league is starting Thursday night.”

The Bears are one of four Mid-South teams in the Top 25 and five getting votes in this week’s poll. Georgetown College is 12-3 and moved up five places to No. 13 this week, while the University of the Cumberlands fell 10 spots to No. 19 with an 11-4 record. Campbellsville comes in at No.21, with WVU Tech picking up a vote in the ratings.

Mountain State University leads the way with an 18-0 record, picking up nine of the dozen first-place votes. They are followed by the three other unbeaten teams in the nation – Concordia (Calif.) University, Oklahoma Baptist University and Biola (Calif) University – all off to 15-0 starts, respectively.

LSU-Shreveport, 13-1, rounds out the Top 5. Pikeville begins the second five, followed by Fresno Pacific (Calif.), Southern Poly Tech (Ga.), Southern Nazarene and Westminster (Utah).

The top eight teams in the country have a combined record of 112-5 on the season.

Pikeville’s game at Campbellsville will tip off at 8 p.m., immediately preceded by the Lady Bears vs. Lady Tigers at 6 p.m. Pikeville returns home on Saturday for a doubleheader with Lindsey Wilson, which tips off at 2:30 for the women, 4:30 for men.

Lady Bears get vote: Coach Bill Watson’s Lady Bears of Pikeville College picked up a vote in the Top 25 on Monday for the first time all season.

The Lady Bears will take a 12-4 record into league play, having won three straight and eight of their last nine games. They will meet No. 9 Campbellsville in the MSC opener. The Lady Tigers are 14-1 and the highest of three ranked Mid-South teams, with two others getting votes.
