PIKEVILLE, Ky. – The NAIA released its preseason basketball polls this week and Pikeville College is on the national radar in both the women’s and men’s rankings.
Kelly Wells’ Bears are on the cusp of the Top 25, while Bill Watson’s Lady Bears received a nod as well.
The Bears received 49 voting points in the poll, leaving them at No. 27 in the Div. I ratings. They are one of five Mid-South Conference teams getting votes in the preseason poll.
Robert Morris (Ill.) University is the preseason pick, getting three of the 12 first-place votes. They are followed by Mountain State (W.Va.) University, Fresno Pacific (Calif.) University, Oklahoma Baptist University and McKendree (Ill.) University.
Each of the Top 5 picked up at least one first-place vote.
Georgetown is the top MSC team, checking in at No. 7. The Tigers were the preseason pick to win the conference title this season. Cumberlands was the only other MSC team to make it into the Top 25 at No. 14.
The Bears are next, finishing 14 points behind No. 25 Olivet Nazarene (Ill) University.
“We’re pretty pleased with where we are and think it’s a great launching point for our season,” said Coach Kelly Wells. “We like a lot of things about this team and think we have a lot of potential. Now we have to work hard to make that a reality.”
Lindsey Wilson picked up 14 points to stand 30th. Campbellsville was one of 11 teams to get one vote in the initial ratings.
On the women’s side, three MSC schools find themselves in the Top 25 with two others picking up votes.
Defending national champion Union (Tenn.) University is the preseason pick for the fourth straight year. The Bulldogs got nine of the 11 first-place votes, with 2008 national champion Vanguard (Calif.) University coming in second while picking up the other top lines.
They’re followed in the Top 5 by Oklahoma Baptist University, Point Loma Nazarene (Calif.) University and Lee (Tenn.) University.
The top MSC teams are Campbellsville at No. 11, followed one line later by Cumberlands. Lindsey Wilson is in at No. 17.
Georgetown College got three votes, while Pikeville was one of six teams to get one.
“It gets us on the radar,” said Coach Bill Watson, set to begin his 13th season at the helm of the Lady Bears. “We appreciate the fact that one of the voters like what we’re doing and hope to build on it.”
The Lady Bears open the 2009-10 season on Nov. 4 when they visit Virginia Intermont College at 5:30. The Bears open on Nov. 9 when they play host to Shawnee State at the East Kentucky Expo Center.
