Alumni, graduate students and community users

Alumni of Pikeville College, Morehead State University graduate students, Pike County high school students and community users are welcome at Allara Library. Applications for cards are available at the Circulation Desk and a photo ID is required.

Community users and high school students may borrow a total of five items at any one time.

Alumni and graduate students are not limited.

The audio-visual collection is small and intended for the use of the students and faculty at Pikeville College. All other patrons require special permission to check out these materials and are limited to two items.

Please note that Pikeville College students and faculty are our primary patrons so if an item is requested by a student or faculty member, it may be recalled or you may be unable to renew it.

If the item has not been requested by a student, faculty member or placed on reserve status, it may be renewed by students for two additional loan periods. Community users may renew items one additional loan period.

Renewal of an interlibrary loan item is at the discretion of the lending library. To request a renewal of an interlibrary loan, patrons must use the online form or contact the interlibrary loan staff person at 606.218.5620.

Recalls

All materials are subject to recall if another borrower has requested the item or a faculty member wishes to place the item on reserve. Items needed for reserve will be recalled immediately. Other recalled items must be returned within 10 business days.

Notices

Overdue notices are sent as a courtesy. The borrower is responsible for noting the due date of each circulating item and for returning or renewing the item on time. The first overdue notice is sent after an item has been overdue for three days. Three additional notices will be sent at 10-day intervals.

Lost item notices are sent after an item has been overdue for 90 days.

Faculty members will receive courtesy notices five days before items are due.

Fine rates

Overdue items are 10 cents a day per item with a maximum of $5 per item.

Fines on two-hour reserve items are 10 cents per hour.

Fines on three-, five- or seven-day reserve items are $1 per day.

Fines on DVDs and video tapes are $1 per day.

Privileges are automatically suspended when a patron:

• has five or more overdue items.
• owes fines/replacement costs.
• exceeds limits on lost items.

If you have an overdue interlibrary loan, your privileges will be suspended until the item is returned and/or the lending library reimbursed. Repeated overdue interlibrary loan material will result in the loss of interlibrary loan privileges.

Long overdue, lost or damaged items are billed at the replacement cost of the item plus a $10 processing charge. The patron must also pay the overdue fine.

If you locate an item after you have paid for it, you may return it for a refund. Refunds for lost items are available for 30 days after you have paid. Fines are non-refundable.

Renewing items online

Renewing items online

Patrons can renew items online by visiting the online library catalog. Click on the “Patron Information” button and fill in the form with the library number on your Smart Card and your last name. Click “Submit.” Check the items you wish to renew and submit. Items that have been requested by another patron or renewed the maximum number of times may not renew. Be certain that you are given a new due date.

Interlibrary loan material cannot be renewed by using the above method. To renew interlibrary loan material you must use the interlibrary renewal request form online or contact the interlibrary loan staff person at 606.218.5620.

Please return items to the Circulation Desk during the library’s working hours. When the library is closed, items may be left in the depository slot at the entrance.

The Frank M. Allara Library can request books, articles and videos that are not available in the library. This service is only available to currently enrolled PC and PCSOM students and currently employed PC and PCSOM faculty and staff. Paper forms for interlibrary loan are available at the Circulation Desk, but we recommend using the online form. You may also use the electronic form available in OCLC World Cat. The form must be filled out completely.

The majority of lenders do not charge fees for interlibrary loan. If you do not wish to pay fees, put $0.00 on the form. If there is a charge, we will contact you before proceeding with the request. If you have difficulty with the forms or need assistance, please ask any library staff member. You must allow enough time to receive the item. Books are shipped via a courier or by mail and may take up to three weeks. Articles are usually sent electronically and can take up to one week.

Beverages must be in securely covered containers and are not allowed in computer areas. Food is not allowed in computer areas. Please dispose of all trash neatly in the proper containers.

Tobacco, alcohol and drugs

Tobacco products are not permitted in the building. Consumption of alcoholic beverages and/or the use of illegal drugs is not permitted on library property. Security will be called if staff suspects, or anyone reports, such use.

Disruptive Behavior

Disruptive Behavior

Any behavior that disrupts or hinders use of the library is prohibited on library property. This includes, but is not limited to, excessive noise, inappropriate language or behavior, and verbal or physical harassment of other patrons or library staff.

Bicycles, scooters, roller skates, roller blades and skateboards are not permitted in the building. These types of items should be left outside in such a way that they do not block an exit.

Circulating surveys, petitions, distributing leaflets and other similar activities are not permitted in the library unless authorized by the libary and/or College administration.

Parents or legal guardians are responsible for the behavior of their minor children (under 16 years) in the library.

Library users will be asked to present briefcases and book bags for inspection if the detection alarm is activated when they exit the building.

The violation of federal or state laws or local ordinances will not be permitted in the library. Theft, vandalism and mutilation of library or personal property are criminal offenses and may be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

All students are encouraged to report violations to library staff.

Cellular telephone use can be very disruptive. All library visitors are asked to put their phones on “vibrate” or “quiet” to avoid disturbing others. If you must have a prolonged conversation, the lobby area is designated as “cell phone friendly.”

If you are disturbing others, taking repeated calls or fail to comply with requests to move or be quiet you will be asked to leave the library. The second and third floors are quiet study areas, therefore the use of a cell phone should be limited to closed study rooms or the stairwell.

There are group study rooms on the second and third floors. The rooms are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Placing your belongings in the room and leaving does not reserve the room and items left behind may be at risk of being stolen. If items are left longer than 30 minutes and other students are asking to use the room, the room will be considered vacant and your belongings removed. You may check at the Circulation Desk for your belongings.

Children are not allowed in the library unless accompanied by a parent or guardian. Children must remain with the parent or guardian. Children can use the Internet as long as a parent or guardian remains with the child while they are on the computer. College students are considered adults, therefore the content is not filtered. Unsupervised access by children could result in viewing images or information that parents or guardians consider inappropriate.

The responsibility for the proper use of copyrighted and licensed material lies with the user. The unauthorized use, or misuse, of copyrighted or licensed information may lead to a loss of library privileges and criminal prosecution.

Appointments are required to use Special Collections. Researchers must sign in when using Special Collections and their signature denotes that they agree to abide by the policies and rules set forth below:

1. Keep manuscript material or files in the order that has been established.
2. Materials may not be removed from the search room.
3. Materials and books may not be written on, folded or handled in any manner that is likely to damage them. Use pencils only.
4. Eating, drinking and smoking are prohibited.
5. Briefcases and other personal items should be placed on the floor. The library reserves the right to inspect all research materials and personal articles before a patron leaves the premises.
6. Photocopy requests for selected items will be accepted when copying does not endanger the original manuscript, violate a donor agreement or violate copyright restrictions.
7. Permission to copy does not constitute permission to publish. It is the responsibility of the researcher to determine the copyright holder and to obtain permission to publish.
8. Patrons are asked to leave all materials and books on the tables so they may be counted and filed by staff.

• Exhibits and displays may not involve the sale, advertisement, solicitation or promotion of commercial products.
• The library is not responsible for any items that are lost, damaged or stolen while on exhibit or display.
• The presentation of any display or exhibit does not imply an endorsement of the content by the library or Pikeville College.
