Jyngle Emergency Notification System
Pikeville College students, faculty and staff will have the opportunity to receive voice or text messages on their home, office and cell phones in the event of an emergency, thanks to a new communications program being implemented by the College.
The group messaging service will allow College officials to share emergency information with the College family on a relatively immediate and simultaneous basis.
“In the aftermath of the tragedy at Virginia Tech, we have been examining our communications methods to ensure that, in the unlikely event that we have an emergency situation on campus, we are able to effectively communicate vital information in a timely manner with our students, faculty and staff,” said Pikeville College President Hal Smith. “We believe this system will be a valuable addition to our current methods of communication.”
Using the Jyngle system, the College can send group notification via voice and text messaging regarding emergency situations that might arise on campus, including instructions on areas to avoid if the situation is on-going. With the prevalence of cell phones today, mobile messaging provides an additional way to reach students wherever they are, said Smith.
Pikeville College already has the ability to distribute campus-wide e-mails to those with a pc.edu address. Additionally, the College has other communications channels established in the event of an emergency. Pikeville has a comprehensive emergency response plan.
“The addition of mass voice and text messaging capability is another resource to improve communications and help keep our campus as safe as possible,” said Smith, who added that the College is also exploring the feasibility of additional tools for communicating with students, faculty and staff.
Jyngle.com is a mobile and online messaging service that helps share information with groups of people. Jyngle.com was launched in 2006 to expand social networking options using phone, Short Message Service (SMS) and Internet. The company’s goal is to bring social networks back to the real world through an essential, on-the-go lifeline: your phone. The mass notification system is offered as a free service to colleges and universities.
All numbers in the College’s phone system will automatically be entered in the new notification system. Campus phones will receive a call from Jyngle.com to verify and activate the phone number. Students, faculty and staff should expect to start receiving calls from Jyngle.com in the next few days as numbers are entered in the system. They will be asked to press 1 to verify and activate the phone number for receiving messages.
Students, faculty and staff may enter personal phone numbers, including cell and home phones, through the Pikeville College Web site. Participation is voluntary. There is no charge for the service, but phone company charges for voice or text messages will apply.
Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to participate in the notification system. Questions about the system or registration process may be answered by calling Pikeville College Security at (606) 218-5940.
