Selection & Criteria
Selection for the Booth Scholars Program will be based on a committee’s evaluation of applications and school records. The committee will evaluate each applicant’s academic performance, teacher references, essay content, student work samples, involvement in extracurricular activities, attendance and other relevant information. The Booth Scholars Program may request an interview of candidates before final selection is made. For an eighth grade student to apply to the Booth Scholars Program, he/she must meet the eligibility and selection criteria and submit a completed application. The completed application should be mailed to the Booth Scholars Program, 147 Sycamore Street, Pikeville, Ky. 41501 by October 17, 2008. The student should contact three teachers to complete a Reference Form on his/her behalf. Each of the three teachers should complete a Reference Form for the applicant and should include a statement about the student’s potential, identify special talents and add any comments that may be helpful in the selection process. Specific details or examples are encouraged in the responses.
The Booth Scholars Program will request a copy of necessary school records, test scores and Reference Forms from the school. All applicants will be informed, via mail, of their selection status as soon as the evaluation process is completed. All applicants will be notified of their status by March 31, 2009.
Criteria
The phrase “academically promising students” suggests a number of meanings and is subject to a variety of valid interpretations. For the purposes of the Booth Scholars Program, the following specific and general criteria will be used in selecting Booth Scholars.
Academic Performance and Grade-Point Average (GPA)
Students should consistently perform at or above a “B” grade-point average. Students who excel in a particular area or demonstrate unique talents or creative abilities beyond a given GPA are welcomed candidates for the Booth Scholars Program.Test Scores
Test information (SAT 9, CATS, CTBS, Explore) will be reviewed by the selection committee in the evaluation process.Written Essay
Each applicant must complete the essay included in the application.Student Work Sample
Each applicant must submit two samples of his/her work. The samples may include items from the student’s portfolio such as an essay, short story, science project, math project, musical score, dramatic work or other. Certificates or awards that are not part of a document or project need not be submitted. Materials submitted along with the application to the program are not to be returned to the applicant.Reference Forms
Each applicant must request a Reference Form from three (6th, 7th or 8th grade) individuals, two of whom need to be from the academic disciplines (English, social studies or history, foreign languages, the sciences or mathematics). Each of the three teachers should complete a Reference Form for the applicant. The Reference Form should include a statement about the student’s potential, identify special talents and add any comments that may be helpful in the selection process. Specific details or examples are encouraged in the responses.
General Criteria
Each student should have demonstrated
Academic achievement, leadership and the personal commitment and responsibility to meet the expectations of the program. Ability to cope successfully with a curriculum focusing on enrichment activities and academic work beyond the classroom experience.Each student should exhibit many of the following characteristics
Be flexible enough to explore new ideas and approaches, adapt to new situations and view problems from more than one perspective. Be willing to participate energetically in the academic, social and residential aspects of the program. Demonstrate interpersonal skills that show an understanding of cooperation, responsibility, tolerance and consideration of others. Be able to express himself/herself in writing, orally and/or in the arts.Commitment
Each scholar should participate enthusiastically in all program activities. Each scholar should put forth a solid effort to maintain high academic standards, achieve a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher and engage in study beyond the normal high school curriculum.
