The Booth Scholars Program uses a number of components to serve each Scholar’s individual needs and provide opportunities to develop skills necessary to prepare him/her for success in higher education.
Academic Enrichment Activities
The Booth Scholars Program offers a variety of academic enrichment opportunities including cultural trips, Web-enhanced study and coursework, text resources, mentoring, access to enrichment software programs, on-line tutorials, on-line assessment tools, assistance in goal setting and other activities designed to supplement high school coursework.
Summer Residential Programs
Booth Scholars will spend one to two weeks on the Pikeville College campus each summer during their high school years. While on campus, Scholars will participate in academic, social, career and cultural activities. Laptop computers will be available to scholars to use for educational programs. Instruction in technology and its use in accessing tutorials and other enrichment resources is a strong component of the summer residential program.
Technology Tools and Services
Maintaining an online connection with scholars is an essential goal of the Booth Scholars Program. Many of the activities made available to the scholars will be heavily weighted with the acquisition of computer skills and Web-enhanced learning. Commercial software programs, as well as Web-based coursework and tutorials will be used by the scholars to enrich normal high school curricula. The Booth Scholars Program will work closely with area teachers and school personnel to provide quality activities.
Mentoring
Regional coordinators and mentors, along with campus-based staff, are available to the Booth Scholars and their families on a regular basis to provide on-going support. An online connection with scholars is an essential part of the support and mentoring offered by the program. By providing a private, password-protected Web site to the scholars, staff and mentors will be able to maintain frequent contact through e-mail, bulletin boards and other mediums. Additionally, the scholars will meet in a central location periodically to engage in enrichment and sharing activities.
College Scholarship Assistance
Booth Scholars will be expected to take full advantage of opportunities to grow academically, socially and culturally. The Booth Scholars Program staff will work with scholars and their parents to make available scholarship information from a variety of resources and to assist scholars in searches for scholarships to colleges and universities.
