Pikeville College is a private, four-year liberal arts and sciences college, affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA). Founded in 1889, the College provides an education primarily for Appalachian students from eastern Kentucky and bordering states. Dedicated to training indigenous leaders for the region, Pikeville College prides itself on its low student/faculty ratio, its individualized attention and its caring community environment. The recently established Pikeville College School of Osteopathic Medicine further demonstrates the College’s commitment to the region through the training of family physicians for Appalachia. Founded in 1889 by Presbyterians, Pikeville College is committed to offering a broad liberal arts and sciences education. This foundation provides opportunities for students to develop their full academic and personal potential and prepare for specific careers.

Pikeville College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (1866 Southern Lane, Decatur, Georgia 30033-4097; telephone number (404) 679-4501) to award the associate, baccalaureate and doctoral degrees.

The College’s program for the associate degree in Nursing is approved by the Kentucky Board of Nursing and programs in Teacher Education are approved by the Kentucky Education Professional Standards Board. The Pikeville College School of Osteopathic Medicine is accredited by the Bureau of Professional Education of the American Osteopathic Association.

Academic Programs: Students may choose from three associate degree programs, 24 baccalaureate degree programs and one professional program.

Faculty: Over 50 percent of the 59 undergraduate full-time faculty members hold doctorate or terminal degrees. A low student-to-faculty ratio (15:1) allows professors to know students’ names, ambitions and career goals. Almost all (95 percent) of the 22 medical school full-time faculty members hold terminal degrees.

Students: Total enrollment is about 1,100 students from 34 states and four countries, including approximately 800 undergraduate students and 300 medical students.

Financial Aid: Each year, over 97 percent of Pikeville College students receive financial assistance in the form of scholarships, grants, work-study, and loans.

Annual Cost (2008-2009):

Undergraduate: $14,250 (tuition), $6,000 (room & board), $1,250 (textbooks)

School of Osteopathic Medicine: $32,850 for tuition (provides for required textbooks, lab equipment, laptop computer, portable OP&P table, stethoscope, otoscope, lab coats and scrub suits)

Athletics: NAIA Division I, Region XI, Mid-South Conference. Sports include football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s bowling, men’s and women’s tennis, softball, men’s and women’s cross-country, volleyball and men’s and women’s soccer.

Campus Facilities: The facilities are constantly being updated as Pikeville College grows and changes. Recent renovations to two women’s residence halls, Derriana and Condit Hall, now provide Internet access in each room. A new residence facility featuring modern suites opened in fall 2002. To fully accommodate the School of Osteopathic Medicine, a fourth floor addition was added to the Armington Science Learning Center, which houses two research labs, a 35-seat microbiology/pathology lab and a state-of-the-art 75 seat classroom. The Pikeville College Osteopathic Telemedical Center opened in 2001 and now provides modern telemedicine capabilities and houses a medical library.
